DAY. 25. 21/1/2017. Antigua to Barbuda

And then there were 4 – the next 2 weeks with just the 4 of us.

Leaving Jolly Harbour Antigua off to Barbuda. Another sensational day motoring on crystal clear water – took some great videos. Anchored off a beach and Chris decided to swim to shore and checkout a couple of ramshackle deserted bars on the beach. There’s a couple of guys on the beach and Chris can’t resist having a chat. Turns out  they call ‘John’ who just happens to own one of the bars and is a taxi driver. One of Chris and Jenny’s flights was from Montreal when a fellow traveller said they had to meet John the taxi guy!! Ridiculous !!!

So onshore we go to play darts and drink rum punch in Johns bar on the beach. From nowhere there appears  a Brit called Ian (turned out he was a high court judge) on his bicycle and pretty much the next few hours he  barely drew breath .  John suggests dinner at  Byrons cafe for lobster! Well it would have been impolite to say no so Ians bike goes in the back of the ute and off we go. We need cash at Byrons so John stops at the only ATM on this side of the island which is in the middle of nowhere and is pretty much a concrete box. Anyway it worked so thats the main thing. The food was  amazing! – cost about US$20 ! And oh dear the sunset !!  It was breathtaking. 4 local boys came along to jump off the little pier  – it was so lovely to see them mucking around – We took so many photos.   We learnt so much from John about Barbuda – a very poor island, barely 1m above sea level (with climate change it will probably disappear into the ocean one day) all land is freehold so everyone just negotiates where they build. No such thing as borrowing money to build so everyone builds till their money runs out, saves some more and then continues so there’s lots of single storey houses waiting for their second floors when there’s money.

John was a fantastic guy. A quick drive   back to the beach where, thankfully , the dingy was still there – phew!
